21mm Plywood
21mm plywood is a practical thickness used across many trade jobs. This thickness is chosen when the sheet needs to stay firm and hold its shape. It feels stable in use and performs well in real builds. Plywood 21mm is often used where movement, flex or sag would cause problems later on.
What is 21mm ply sheet?
A 21mm ply sheet is built by pressing several thin wood layers together to form a solid 21 millimetre panel. It weighs more than thinner plywood, but feels much firmer in use. This thickness is commonly used when the board needs to support the build itself, not just cover it. Plywood sheets 21mm can come in different grades, cores and face finishes, but the behaviour stays the same. Strong. Dense. Built to handle pressure.
What is 21mm ply used for?
In furniture and joinery, 21mm plywood is used for carcasses that need to stay square. Wardrobes, built-in benches, storage units. It keeps panels straight and joints tight. Shelves made from ply 21mm are a good option when spans are wider and sag is a concern.
On site and in workshops, this thickness is used for worktops, platforms and lining panels that take daily wear. Tools, impact, repeated use. Thinner sheets show fatigue faster.
21mm plywood sheets are available in 2400x 1220mm, 2400 x 1200mm (8’ x 4’) and 2500 x 1220 (8,2’ x 4’). Boards are supplied with square edges or tongue and groove, depending on the application. The surface comes in a veneer finish, including smooth sanded veneer where required, as well as pressed paper or mesh pattern options, depending on the sheet. Sheets are lacquerable, paintable, and suitable for varnish or staining. 21mm plywood meets BS EN 636 Class 2 and Class 3. Moisture-resistant options are available. Formaldehyde level is E1. Grades include B/BB, with FSC-certified sheets where marked. Suitable for interior use, exterior use, and exterior applications where treatment is required.
Benefits of 21mm ply sheet
- Keeps fixings tight and secure, even with repeated use.
- Can reduce the need for extra framing or backing behind the sheet.
- Holds clean edges after cutting and machining.
- Performs consistently across larger panel sizes
- Reduces callbacks caused by movement or panel failure
- Suitable for builds where tolerance and alignment matter.
- A dependable option when the sheet is part of the structure, not a finish layer.
