  • Description

9mm Bead & Butt Primed Short Grooved Moisture Resistant MDF 101.6mm Centres 1220 x 2440mm (4′ x 8′) turns a flat wall or ceiling into a crisp, panelled feature without the fuss of fitting individual battens. It arrives pre-primed in white and ready to paint, which skips a messy first coat and gets you to the finished look faster.

On this board the bead and butt profile sits at 101.6mm centres and runs along the short 1220mm width. That short direction is the detail to think about before you order. Fitted as a tall sheet, the grooves read as horizontal lines, which is the look people want behind a bed, along a hallway or as a banded lower wall. If you need the lines to travel the other way, the long grooved board in the same range runs them down the 2440mm length instead. Choosing the right one the first time means your grooves land exactly where you planned them.

    Ready primed for paint

The factory primer is a white waterborne base coat with strong filling power and easy sanding, so the surface reaches you smooth and even. A light key with fine paper is usually all it needs before your topcoat goes on. It accepts both water based and solvent based paints, so you can match whatever finish suits the room. Because the panel comes primed rather than fully painted, the final colour and sheen are still yours to choose.

    Built for steamy rooms

This is moisture-resistant MDF, made to handle the damp air of bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms far better than standard MDF. Moisture resistant is not the same as waterproof, though. The board is an interior product, so it should not sit in standing water, take direct splashing or go outside. Keep it clear of the bath edge and shower zone, seal the cut edges properly, and it will hold up well in a humid room.

    How the boards join

    • Square cut, butt-jointed edges, so sheets sit flat against one another with no raised lip
    • The edges finish on a half groove, so where two boards meet the join falls inside a groove line
    • That tucks the seam away and keeps the groove pattern reading as one continuous run
    • These are bead and butt panels, not tongue and groove, so there is no interlocking edge to slot together

    Where it works best

    • Feature walls in bedrooms and living rooms, where the panelled lines add depth and character
    • Ceilings, where a single manageable sheet covers ground quickly overhead
    • Hallways and stairwells, where a panelled finish stands up to everyday knocks
    • Bathrooms and en-suites, on walls kept back from direct water, for a calm spa-like feel
    • Shop fits, receptions and other commercial spaces that need a smart wall finish in a hurry

Made in the UK by Matchboard from eucalyptus and pine fibre, the board is manufactured to meet the EN 622-5 fibreboard standard and carries an E1 low formaldehyde rating. It is FSC certified, non-structural and weighs around 19kg per 8×4 sheet, which is manageable for one or two people to lift and position.

Q How do I join 2 panels . Are they tongue and groove . answer now
      Asked by Stewart
A These are bead and butt panels, which means that you can make a continuous pattern, but you cannot join them in tongue and groove. The T&G system is present in this product: SM4255

Q can this be used as a bath panel? answer now
      Asked by debbie
A Yes, however, make sure that no water would get into contact with the plywood directly.

    1. Q How many grooves run across each board?
      A

The grooves are machined at 101.6mm centres and run along the short 1220mm side of the board. Installed vertically, they create a horizontal panelled effect across the wall.

    2. Q Do I fix these with adhesive or screws?
      A

Both work. On a flat, sound wall, a good grab adhesive is usually enough. On uneven walls or over battens, screws give a firmer hold just countersink them slightly and fill the heads before painting so they disappear under the topcoat.

    3. Q Do the cut edges need priming before I paint?
      A

Yes. The faces come primed, but any edge you cut exposes bare MDF, which drinks up paint and can look patchy. Seal fresh cuts with a coat of primer or diluted PVA first, especially in a bathroom, where sealed edges also help with moisture.

    4. Q How do I get a neat finish around sockets and pipework?
      A

Mark and cut openings before fixing, using a jigsaw or hole saw. Leave a small clearance around fittings rather than a tight push fit, then cover the gap with the socket plate or a neat bead of decorator's caulk once painted.

    5. Q Should I leave an expansion gap when fitting?
      A

A small gap of a few millimetres at the floor, ceiling and any fixed edge is good practice. It lets the board move slightly with changes in temperature and humidity without bowing, and skirting or coving hides the gap afterwards.

    6. Q Can I stain it for a wood effect instead of painting?
      A

Because it arrives primed white, the surface is set up for opaque paint and solid-colour finishes rather than a translucent natural-wood stain. For colour, sprayed finishes and most decorative looks, it is ideal, but a bare-timber grain effect is not something this primed panel can give you.
