25mm FR MDF

The inspector wants Euroclass B. The joiner wants a board that holds fixings properly. The client wants it to look right. 25mm FR MDF is where all three requirements meet. This is the heaviest working thickness in the fire retardant MDF range and it is built for projects that demand more than a standard lining board.

What is 25mm fire retardant MDF?

25mm fire retardant MDF is a non-structural interior board manufactured with fire inhibiting compounds integrated into the fibre core during production. The fire performance is not a coating. It runs through the full depth of the board. Cut it, shape it, rout it. The classification holds.

At 25mm, this is the heaviest standard thickness in the FR MDF range. It is chosen when the project needs mass and structural presence in a fitted element, not just a compliant surface layer. Thick enough to take hardware properly. Rigid enough to hold its shape across wider spans without additional support.

Both boards achieve Euroclass B classification under EN 13501-1. The full classification is B-s1, d0.

B means the board significantly limits fire spread. s1 means very limited smoke production. d0 means no flaming droplets fall from the board during a fire. In occupied buildings, that matters. Falling burning material causes secondary ignition and slows evacuation. d0 removes that risk.

Both Finsa and Medite Premier FR boards are pinkish/red. On a busy site with multiple board types in use, the colour tells you what you are working with without checking every sheet.

This board is for internal dry use only. It is not moisture resistant. Bathrooms, kitchens and external applications are not suitable. Boards come with square cut edges and a smooth sanded finish, ready for painting, lacquering or laminating straight off the sheet.

Finsa vs Medite Premier FR. What is the difference?

Both boards are Euroclass B. Both are CE marked. Both are used daily on UK commercial projects. The choice comes down to what your specific project needs.

Finsa is manufactured in Spain and carries an ultra-low formaldehyde rating of E05, below the standard E1 threshold. The surface is smooth and lacquerable. It is the stronger choice for projects with indoor air quality requirements, such as healthcare environments or sensitive public spaces. CARB Phase 2 compliant.

Medite Premier FR is manufactured in Ireland and is part of the Medite Smartply range. It meets E1 formaldehyde levels and additionally complies with CARB2. CE marked under EN 13986. Widely recognised across UK public sector specifications, with strong technical support available.

If your spec names a brand, use that brand. If not, both are in stock, both come with full certification, and both are ready to go.

What is 25mm fire retardant MDF used for?

25mm is the specialist end of the FR MDF range. It is not a lining board. It is not a ceiling panel. It is chosen when the fitted element needs to carry weight, hold hardware and meet a fire specification at the same time. Joiners, shopfitters and furniture makers working on compliant commercial projects reach for 25mm when thinner boards simply will not do the job.

Heavy fitted furniture and cabinetry

The primary use. Reception desks, counters, storage carcasses, built-in wardrobes and shelving units in commercial environments where fire compliance is part of the spec. At 25mm, the board holds screws and hardware at full load without splitting or pulling out. It gives carcass panels the rigidity needed across wider spans without flexing under weight. This is the thickness that lets you build furniture the same way you always have, just with fire performance built in.

Worktops and horizontal surfaces

Where a flat, rigid surface is needed, and fire compliance applies. 25mm FR MDF gives enough mass to resist flex under load and provides a stable substrate for laminates, veneers or paint. Used in reception areas, hospitality environments, retail counters, and anywhere a surface sees regular use and needs to meet building regulations.

Shopfitting and retail interiors

Display structures, feature walls with depth, back panels on heavy retail units, and branded interior installations. At 25mm, the board gives shopfitters the mass they need for structures that will take fixings, carry load and still present a clean finished surface. Widely used across retail fit-outs where both appearance and compliance are written into the brief.

Stage sets and theatrical installations

Theatre and entertainment venues regularly specify fire rated materials for set construction and temporary structures. 25mm gives the rigidity needed for structural set elements while meeting the fire rating required by venue management and local authority licensing.

Door blanks and thick door components

Where MDF is used as a substrate or core in door construction, and the specification requires Euroclass B throughout. 25mm provides the thickness needed for solid door construction without switching to a different material.

Where it should not be used

Internal dry use only. Not moisture resistant. Not structural. Do not use in bathrooms, kitchens, external areas or any application where the board carries structural loads.
