18mm FR MDF
On paper, it is a fire rated board. On site, it is your working material. 18mm FR MDF gives you the depth and strength needed for joinery and interior structures, while meeting the fire class written into the project. It behaves as MDF should. The fire performance is already built in.
What is 18mm fire retardant MDF?
It is MDF with fire performance built in. Not sprayed on. Not coated after the fact. It is not a surface treatment. The fire protection runs through the whole board, so when you cut it, drill it or shape it, nothing changes at the edges.
It is still MDF at its core. Wood fibres are pressed together with resin under heat. The surface comes out smooth and even, ready for finishing without extra work. It works exactly like standard MDF. The difference is what happens when fire reaches it. At 18mm it is one of the most common thicknesses used in commercial interiors.
The fire rating
All 18mm FR MDF in this range is Euroclass B, classified under EN 13501-1. The full classification is B-s1, d0. B means the board significantly limits fire spread. s1 means very limited smoke production. d0 means no flaming droplets fall from the board, which matters in occupied buildings where burning material falling from walls or ceilings causes secondary ignition and slows evacuation.
This board buys time. Time to get people out. Time for fire services to respond. That is what Euroclass B is designed to do.
Both boards are pink. That is intentional. It makes fire retardant MDF easy to spot on site and impossible to confuse with standard board. This is not a moisture-resistant board. It is made for dry interior conditions only.
Finsa or Medite: which one do you need?
Both boards are Euroclass B. Both are CE marked. Both are used daily on UK commercial projects. The choice comes down to what your specific project needs.
Finsa is manufactured in Spain and carries an ultra-low formaldehyde rating of E05, below the standard E1 threshold. The surface is smooth and lacquerable. It is the stronger choice for projects with indoor air quality requirements, such as healthcare environments or sensitive public spaces. CARB2 compliant.
Medite Premier FR is manufactured in Ireland and is part of the Medite Smartply range. It meets E1 formaldehyde levels and additionally complies with CARB2. CE marked under EN 13986. Widely recognised across UK public sector specifications, with strong technical support available.
If your spec names a brand, use that brand. If not, both are in stock, both come with full certification, and both are ready to go.
What is 18mm fire retardant MDF used for?
18mm is the joinery thickness. It is what joiners and shopfitters reach for when the board needs to do real work, hold screws, take hardware, support weight and still finish cleanly. Fire compliance is built in.
Joinery and fitted furniture
Reception desks, counters, storage units, built-in furniture, back of house cabinetry. 18mm is thick enough to take screws and hardware properly without extra reinforcement. It machines cleanly, holds its shape and finishes well. This is the board that lets you build compliant, fitted elements without changing your process or your tools.
Shopfitting and retail display
Retail display units, feature walls, branded interiors, and back panels on fitted units. 18mm FR MDF is the standard choice where both appearance and compliance are required in the same space. It gives shopfitters the rigidity they need across larger unsupported spans and the surface quality needed for a finished result.
Partition facing
Used as the facing layer on non-load-bearing partitions where fire compliance and fixing strength both matter. At 18mm, the board handles everyday use in busy commercial spaces and supports mounted elements without extra reinforcement in most cases.
Wall linings and large panels
Where larger wall areas need to stay flat and stable. 18mm boards hold their shape across long runs without visible movement, which matters on high-specification interiors where the finish is closely inspected.

Why choose our 18mm FR MDF?
We stock 18mm fire retardant MDF from two of the most respected manufacturers in the market. Finsa and Medite Premier FR are widely accepted across UK projects. Both come with full documentation and recognised certification, so you are covered when it comes to building control or project sign off.
A range that covers real project needs. We stock 18mm fire retardant MDF in both standard UK sheet sizes. 2440 x 1220mm for general use and 3050 x 1220mm where larger panels reduce joints and speed up installation.
Made for real site work. It cuts clean, fixes like standard MDF and finishes to the same level. No need to change tools or rethink your process.
Helps you avoid common problems. Wrong material is one of the fastest ways to delay a project. Using 18mm fire MDF where it is required means no last minute replacements, no failed inspections and no wasted time.
Delivered ready for the job. Boards are available for fast UK delivery, with options for bulk orders, pallet quantities and trade pricing depending on project size.
FAQ
What is the difference between the Finsa and Medite Premier FR boards at 18mm?
Both are Euroclass B certified, and both are widely used on UK commercial projects. The main practical differences are around surface finish and application focus. Finsa has a lacquerable surface and an ultra-low formaldehyde emission at E05. Medite Premier FR has published screw holding data (1000N face, 600N edge) and has been tested in a specific partition wall build-up that achieves 60 minutes fire resistance under BS 476 Part 22, when the correct specification is followed. If your spec names a brand, use that brand. If not, both are suitable for standard Euroclass B applications.
What does Euroclass B actually mean for an MDF board?
Euroclass B is a fire reaction classification under EN 13501-1, the standard used across the UK and Europe. It means the board has been tested and confirmed to contribute very limited combustion to a fire. In practical terms, a Euroclass B board slows the spread of fire significantly compared to standard MDF. The full classification for these boards is B-s1, d0. The s1 rating means very limited smoke production. The d0 rating means no flaming droplets or particles fall from the board during a fire. This matters in occupied buildings because it supports safer evacuation and reduces secondary ignition risk.
Can I use 18mm fire retardant MDF in a bathroom or kitchen?
This board has no moisture resistance built in. Steam, humidity swings or regular water exposure will get into the fibres. Over time, the board will swell and lose its shape. If the project needs both fire performance and moisture resistance, you are looking at a different product, not this one.
Can 18mm FR MDF be painted or lacquered?
Yes, and this is where it behaves exactly like standard MDF. The face is already smooth, so you can go straight to primer and finish. No extra prep beyond light sanding on edges after cutting. If the fire rating matters for sign off, just check the coating system. Some paints are designed to work with fire rated boards and keep the classification intact.
Can I use 18mm fire retardant MDF for furniture or cabinetry?
Yes. The board is thick enough to take screws and hardware properly, machines cleanly and finishes well. When you start building cabinets, counters or fitted units, you need thickness for strength and fixings. These boards give you that. You are not choosing between fire performance and a good result. You get both on the same board.
Is 18mm FR MDF structural?
No. All boards in this range are non-structural. They are for interior linings, partitions, joinery, and fitted elements only. Do not use them as load-bearing components, floor decking, or in applications where the board must carry structural loads.
