Tongue and Groove Plywood
Tongue and groove plywood gives you boards that lock neatly into place and stay firm under real use. The sheets lock together along the edges, so every board supports the next. Builders choose tongue and groove plywood flooring because it removes awkward gaps, speeds up fitting and creates a surface that stays flat under real use. It is a reliable way to build strong subfloors without extra effort or extra fixing work.
What is tongue and groove plywood?
Tongue and groove plywood sheets have shaped edges that slot into each other. One side has a tongue. The other has a groove. Push them together and the joints stay tight. The surface feels level and firm. T&G plywood flooring is used to make subfloors that act as one solid layer, not separate panels. Tongue groove plywood also helps reduce movement, squeaks, and flex across the room.
What is tongue and groove plywood used for?
Most builders use it for subfloors, because the tight joint stops edges lifting and keeps flooring quiet and firm under daily traffic. It is also used in roof decks, especially on long spans, where the tongue and groove joint helps share the load across sheets.
These boards work well in extensions, lofts and new builds where movement control matters more than looks. Many trade teams choose T&G plywood for stages, platforms and raised floors, because the edges lock and stay level even after heavy use. Homeowners use tongue and groove ply for DIY flooring projects too: it guides itself into place, so fitting feels cleaner and faster.
Tongue and groove plywood from Sheet Materials Wholesale is offered in 18mm, 21mm and 22mm thicknesses. Sizes include 2400 x 1220mm (8’ x 4’), 2400 x 600mm and 2425 x 600mm. Depending on the board of your choice, they are made to fit BS EN636 Class 2 and Class 3, with EN314-2 CI3, EN636-2 and CE2+ structural standards. Many come in B/C or CPS grades, with smooth sanded veneer finishes, lacquerable, paintable and stainable faces. Sheets are available for interior or exterior use, with moisture resistance and thermal options, plus E1 formaldehyde levels. FSC certification applies where marked.
