Tile Backer Board
On busy projects, materials need to perform without slowing the pace. Tile backer board supports exactly that approach. It installs quickly, feels familiar under tools and keeps tiled surfaces steady long term. Straightforward, durable and built for real work.
What is a tile backer board?
A tile backer board is the sheet you fix first when tiles need a steady base. Most are cement-based or fibre cement boards, depending on the product, so they stay solid without feeling heavy to handle. Fixed correctly, they give a steady surface that does not flex or move over time.
Boards are supplied in 6mm, 12mm, 18mm and 22mm thicknesses. Common sizes include 1200 × 600mm and 1200 × 800mm, the sizes however vary by the manufacturer. Edges are normally square or tongue and groove for a neat join, and the face comes smooth and ready for the next stage of work. Most cement boards achieve Euroclass A1 fire rating, and sometimes Euroclass E or D, this is supported by the attached data and technical information of the product you purchase. All offer strong resistance to moisture. They can be used indoors as supplied and outdoors when correctly treated and sealed, as mentioned by the manufacturer.
What is tile backer board used for?
Tile backer board is used where tiled surfaces need a stable base that stays reliable over time. It is commonly fixed behind shower walls and across wet room floors, where moisture is constant, and movement is not an option. It performs consistently when tiling onto backer board across wet areas. In steam rooms, it stays stable even under constant heat and humidity as part of a waterproof system.
In kitchens, it works well behind splashbacks exposed to steam, heat and regular cleaning. Around the home, it is often fitted in utility rooms and laundry spaces where water use is frequent. It is also used on hallway and entrance floors that see daily foot traffic. Beyond standard interiors, tile backer board is installed on mezzanine levels and in garden rooms or annexes, where conditions change through the year but stability still matters.

Buy it directly from Sheet Materials Wholesale. You can order online, choose the sizes you need and get boards delivered to site or home.
How to install tile backer board?

Can you use tile backer board on the floor?
Yes, it works well on floors when installed correctly. Make sure the base is firm, fix the backer board evenly and tile on backer board once everything is secure. Done right, it handles everyday use without issues.
Can you plaster tile backer board?
You can, but it is not really what a tile board is meant for. It performs far better as a stable base behind tiles than as a plastered finish.
