22mm plywood is commonly used where thinner boards feel unreliable. Floors need to stay firm. Roof decks need to carry load. Structural work needs a sheet that does not shift once fixed. Builders choose plywood 22mm because it stays flat, takes fixings cleanly and does not cause problems during installation. Core options vary, which makes it easier to pick the right board depending on strength, stability or handling on site.
What is 22mm ply sheet?
A 22mm ply sheet is a structural plywood board made by bonding multiple layers of timber veneer together under pressure. The grain direction changes from layer to layer. This construction is what gives 22mm plywood sheets their stiffness and resistance to movement.
At this thickness, plywood sheets 22mm are used where weight and repeated load are expected. Floors, roof decks and permanent structural builds are typical examples. Performance depends on how the sheet is built. Softwood plywood focuses on engineered strength. Eucalyptus faced boards are more stable in humid conditions. Combi core plywood sits between the two, balancing strength, weight and ease of handling.
What is 22mm plywood used for?
22mm plywood works well for structural floors and subfloors, including areas laid under tiles, engineered timber or vinyl. The boards stay firm underfoot and cope well with weight from furniture and regular use.
The same thickness is often used for roof decking, where stiffness is important, and for loft floors or access platforms that are expected to carry storage safely. In these areas, plywood 22mm offers a good balance between strength and manageable handling on site.
22mm plywood sheets are used for stair bases and treads where clean fixing and rigidity matter. Pre-machined boards are also used in underfloor heating systems, helping keep pipe layouts accurate and installation straightforward.
Away from main living spaces, plywood sheets 22mm are widely used in workshops, garages and utility areas. They suit hard wearing floors, bench tops and general work surfaces. The same material is often used for heavy duty shelving, storage units and built in furniture where thinner boards would flex.
In commercial spaces, 22mm plywood is regularly used for shop fitting. Display platforms, raised floor sections, counters and reception desks all benefit from the strength and stability of this thickness. Exhibition stands and event structures also rely on 22mm plywood sheets, as they can be assembled, taken down and reused without losing performance.
Vehicle conversions are another practical application. Plywood 22mm is used for van floors, mobile workshops and utility vehicles where durability and predictable behaviour are important. It is also used for wall linings and structural panels in plant rooms, storage rooms and other service areas.
22mm plywood works well in outdoor and farm settings where the surface needs to stay firm and level. It is often used in garden buildings, greenhouses and working areas, as well as in animal housing, from walkways and feeding zones to raised floors and enclosure bases, when the correct grade is chosen, and the edges are sealed. Exterior flooring and structural panels are also possible when the board is treated and protected for outdoor conditions.
Types of 22mm ply board
22mm plywood sheets are available in 2400 x 600mm, 2425 x 600mm, 2440 x 1220mm (8’ x 4’) and 3050 x 1525mm (10’ x 5’). Boards are supplied with square edges or tongue and groove, depending on the application. The surface comes in a veneer finish, including smooth sanded veneer where required. 22mm plywood sheets meet BS EN 636 Class 2 and Class 3, with EN 314 2/3 options available. Structural performance is confirmed to CE2+ requirements. Fire retardant plywood options are available with Euroclass D-s2 d0. Grades include B/BB, BB/CC and B/C. Moisture resistant options are also available. Formaldehyde level is E1. FSC-certified is available where marked. Suitable for interior use, exterior use, and exterior applications where the board needs to be treated All of this information is backed by the documentation provided within each product but may differ from sheet to sheet.
22mm plywood sheets are made in a few different ways. The thickness stays the same, but the core and face change how the board feels and performs on site.
Softwood plywood 22mm is often used for floors and roof decking. It is strong, takes a load well and behaves predictably during installation. Appearance is not the priority here. Performance is.
Eucalyptus faced hardwood plywood offers better stability. It is commonly used in interior builds and spaces where moisture is present. These 22mm plywood sheets tend to move less over time, often containing multiple wood species in the core.
Chinese eucalyptus plywood is mostly made from hardwood throughout the sheet; however, there are options with eucalyptus face or mixed wood species present, too. Please refer to product specs for more information. It suits both interior and exterior use. When used outside, the board needs to be sealed before installation.
Combi core plywood combines poplar and eucalyptus veneers. This keeps the board lighter and easier to handle. Strength is still there, which makes plywood sheets 22mm of this type a practical all round option.
