24mm Plywood

24mm plywood is a thick, heavy duty sheet designed for jobs where strength comes first. Plywood 24mm is chosen when thinner boards are not rigid enough, and the surface needs to stay flat under real load. These 24mm plywood sheets suit both trade and experienced DIY users who want a solid, dependable result.

What is 24mm ply sheet?

A 24mm ply sheet is a multi layer plywood board made by bonding thin wood veneers with alternating grain direction. This construction gives plywood sheets 24mm high stiffness, good load distribution and reliable stability across the full sheet.

What is 24mm ply used for?

24mm plywood is widely used for structural subfloors in homes, extensions and loft spaces where durability is important. The same thickness is also used for temporary site flooring and for stage or exhibition builds that need a rigid panel.

For wall construction, plywood at this thickness is used for structural sheathing, stud wall reinforcement and shear wall applications in timber frame builds. Its resistance to impact makes it a sensible option for busy internal areas. When treated boards are specified, they can also form part of fire rated wall systems.

24mm ply is widely used in roofing for flat roof decking, roof build ups and access platforms, including dormer bases. Stair treads, landings and structural stair components also benefit from the stiffness of a thicker plywood sheet.

Beyond structural building work, this board is commonly used for heavy duty shelving, storage systems, workbenches and joinery frames where strength and stiffness are important. It is also a practical choice for shopfitting, bar fronts and reception counters. When properly protected, it can be used in outdoor, agricultural and garden applications that need a durable panel.

Types of 24mm ply board

Softwood plywood is often used for general building work. It is common on site for floors, wall construction, temporary works and packaging. This type is chosen when practicality matters more than appearance.

Birch plywood is selected for projects that need reliable strength and consistency. It is used in structural builds, heavy duty joinery and commercial interiors. Large format sheets are available and help reduce the number of joints.

Melamine faced plywood is intended for interior use where a finished surface is required from the start. It is widely used for furniture, cabinets and fit out projects. This option suits spaces where no extra finishing is planned.

Douglas Fir plywood has a cleaner face and more natural look. It is used for joinery, furniture and interior applications where the surface remains visible.

Fire retardant plywood is supplied for projects with fire performance requirements. It is used in regulated environments where compliance is essential.

24mm plywood is available in size 2440 x 1220mm (8’ x 4’), 2500 x 1220mm (8.2’ x 4’), 3050 x 1220mm (10’ x 4’) and 3050 x 1525mm (10’ x 5’). The boards are manufactured BS EN 636 Class 2, with EN 314 2/3 bonding, and supplied with square edges. Depending on the selected option, the sheet can be decorative, paintable, lacquerable, or suitable for varnishing and staining. Available finishes include repaired and sanded faces, standard sanded finish, smooth sanded veneer finish, lacquered surface, mesh pattern, and non textured semi matt smooth surfaces. Fire retardant options are available with a Euroclass B rating, and all boards meet E1 low formaldehyde emission requirements.

A wide range of grades is offered, including A/A, B/BB, BB/BB, BB/CP, C+/C, face 220/120g reverse, G/III and G1S. Moisture resistant options are also available. Product standards include CE2+ and CE4 classifications, with both structural and non structural boards supplied. Depending on specification and treatment, 24mm plywood is suitable for interior use, exterior applications, and exterior use where additional protection or treatment is required. FSC-certified options are available where marked.
