  • Description

9mm Bead & Butt Primed Long Grooved Moisture Resistant MDF 101.6mm Centres 2440 x 1220mm (8′ x 4′) gives a wall instant vertical panelling, with the grooves running the full 2440mm length of the sheet. Run the board upright and the grooves stand vertical across its 1220mm width, twelve of them at 101.6mm centres. Those long lines pull the eye upward. A room reads taller and more finished at once. It reaches you primed in white on the face, so you are one proper paint system away from a built-in look.

    Primed on the face

The front comes ready primed, which gives you a smooth white base and saves that first messy coat. The back is left bare, so prime it too if it will show or sit in a damp spot. One point worth knowing: ordinary wall emulsion is made for plaster, not timber, so it will not wear well here. Use a wood primer undercoat, then a trim finish such as satinwood or eggshell, and the surface holds up for years.

    Made for humidity, not water

This is moisture-resistant MDF, happy with the steamy air of a bathroom or kitchen where standard MDF would swell. It resists damp, but it is not waterproof. Treat it as an interior board, keep it away from standing water and direct splashing, and never use it outdoors. Seal every cut edge before fitting, since a raw edge is where moisture gets in.

    How the boards meet

    • Square cut, butt-jointed edges that sit tight against the next board
    • Each long edge finishes on a half groove, so two boards butt side by side and the seam lands inside a groove
    • The 101.6mm repeat carries on unbroken, so the wall reads as one continuous run
    • Bead and butt, not tongue and groove, so the boards butt up rather than slot into each other

    Where it works best

    • Full-height feature walls and chimney breasts, where vertical lines add height
    • Hallways and landings, where tall panelling smartens a narrow space
    • Behind a bed, for a fitted headboard-style panel without the joinery
    • Ceilings run lengthways, for a long, continuous lined effect
    • Bathroom and kitchen walls set back from direct water, for a soft panelled feel
    • Shops, salons and reception areas that want a classic wall finish quickly

Made in the UK by Matchboard from eucalyptus and pine fibre, the board is built to the EN 622-5 fibreboard specification and rated E1 for low formaldehyde. It is FSC certified, non-structural. Each 8×4 sheet weighs about 19kg, manageable for one or two people to handle.

The emulsion is for walls and ceilings, not wood, you require to buy a primer undercoat and then get Dulux satinwood for the finish coat on the boards.

A The best way is to screw it, and if you decide to do so, you will need to fill them and then paint them, or you can stick the board with some grip adhesive, but this might not hold it properly. The board is primed on one side.

      Asked by Christine
A Hi Christine, this product is a moisture-resistant MDF and therefore does not carry any fire resistance features. I would advise consulting with your building control to find out if it will comply but I'd like to emphasize that it is not a fire-resistant product. If you are after fire-resistant MDF, please follow the following link https://sheetmaterialswholesale.co.uk/sheet-materials/mdf/fire-retardant-mdf/

    1. Q How many full boards will I need for my wall?
      A

Each sheet covers 2440mm by 1220mm, so measure your wall area and divide, then add around ten percent for cuts and waste. Because the grooves repeat every 101.6mm, it is worth setting out from a focal point like a chimney breast so part-grooves end up at the corners rather than the centre.

    2. Q Do the grooves line up when I stack boards end to end?
      A

Running vertically, a single 2440mm board reaches most ceiling heights in one piece, so you often avoid a horizontal join altogether. If your wall is taller, plan the join to fall behind coving or a dado rail, as the long grooves themselves only align side to side, not end to end.

    3. Q Can I round off or shape the edges for an external corner?
      A

The face is only 9mm thick, so there is little material to round over. For a neat external corner, most fitters mitre the two boards or cover the joint with a slim corner moulding rather than trying to profile the edge itself.

    4. Q Does it need a gap at the floor and ceiling?
      A

Yes, leave a few millimetres at the top, bottom and any fixed edge. Skirting, coving or scotia then hides the gap, and that small allowance lets the board expand and contract with the seasons without lifting at the joins.

    5. Q Is it safe to fit behind a hob or where fire rules apply?
      A

No. This board has no fire rating, so keep it away from gas hobs and anywhere fire performance is required. Choose a fire-rated MDF instead and check with building control if the location falls under building regulations.

    6. Q Can I have the long edges rebated for a run of several boards?
      A

No, the panels come exactly as manufactured and cannot be re-profiled to order. You do not need it anyway, the half-groove edge is designed so boards butt together into a continuous pattern on their own.

    7. Q Can I fit the board horizontally instead of vertically?
      A

Yes. Stand it 2.4m tall for vertical grooves, or turn it on its side at 1.2m high to run the lines horizontally. Just plan which edges meet so the join still lands neatly inside a groove.
