  • Description

The 9mm V Grooved Primed Long Grooved Moisture Resistant MDF with 200mm centres is the modern face of the V-grooved range. Where traditional panelling places grooves close together at around 100mm, this sheet spreads them out to 200mm, giving you wider panels between each groove line and a noticeably more contemporary look on the finished wall. The 8×2 sheet format, long grooved profile and moisture resistant MDF core remain exactly as practical as ever. Each sheet weighs around 9.52kg, manageable for one-person handling.

T&G long edges that lock together

The two long edges of this sheet come with a tongue and groove profile, the same as on the 101.6mm centres 8×2 version. When sheets meet along their 2440mm sides, the tongue of one slots into the groove of the next, and the two boards mechanically lock together. The joint is rigid, holds itself closed without relying on glue or pins, and stays tight through seasonal humidity swings that would gradually open a butt joint. The short ends are square cut.

For a horizontal run of wainscoting, modern dado panelling or a long feature wall, that locking joint is what keeps the whole horizontal band looking crisp years after install.

Primed and ready for your topcoat

The face arrives pre-primed in white, which removes a whole step from your finishing schedule. No sanding raw MDF. No first base coat to flatten down. You fill the screw holes, key the surface lightly with fine sandpaper, and move straight to your topcoat. The primed face also means paint sits evenly across the surface and inside each groove, so the finished wall reads as one clean piece of joinery rather than a patchy collection of absorbed colours.

The four cut edges of the sheet are unprimed, which is normal for this size. If an edge will be visible after install, seal it with MDF sealer or diluted PVA before painting for a uniform finish.

    Built for humid rooms

Standard MDF swells and softens in damp air. This MR grade is engineered to resist that, holding its shape and finish in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and downstairs WCs where ordinary fibreboard would slowly fail. The board is still an interior product though, so anywhere exposed to direct water or outdoor conditions needs a different specification.

Where this 200mm centres 8×2 panel works:

    • Contemporary bedrooms and living rooms, where wider grooves suit modern minimal interiors better than tight period spacing
    • Hotel-style en-suites and master bathrooms, where the wider plank look feels more boutique than traditional
    • Open-plan kitchen and dining spaces, where the spacing matches modern Shaker cabinetry without competing with it
    • Wainscoting in newer properties, where Victorian-tight grooves would feel out of place
    • Bath panels and side returns, where 606mm matches typical UK bath panel heights
    • Fitted wardrobe doors and cupboard fronts in modern designs
    • Stair walls and upper-floor projects, where 1220mm sheets cannot get up tight staircases
    • Shop fits, exhibition stands and bar fronts with a modern aesthetic, where speed and one-person handling matter

This is a non structural decorative panel manufactured in the UK to the EN 622-5 fibreboard specification, FSC® certified and rated E1 for low formaldehyde emissions.

Send me a notification for each new answer.
    1. Q How is the 200mm centres different from 101.6mm centres in real terms?
      A

The look on the wall. 101.6mm puts grooves close together for a traditional, period-style matchboard effect with lots of fine vertical lines. 200mm spreads them out, giving wider planks between each groove and a quieter, more modern surface. The board, the size, the MR grade and the T&G edges are otherwise identical between the two. The choice is purely about the style you want.

    2. Q How many grooves does each sheet show?
      A

Each 606mm wide sheet carries three V grooves across its face, spaced 200mm apart. When two sheets are joined along their long edges, the T&G profile closes into an additional groove that matches the others, so the pattern carries on without a break. The same 8x2 sheet with 101.6mm centres would show five grooves across the face, almost twice as many lines on the wall.

    3. Q Can I use 200mm and 101.6mm panels together on one wall?
      A

Yes, technically, although it is not usually recommended. The two spacings read as different design languages, and putting them next to each other creates a visible mismatch where the eye expects continuity. If you want a feature panel in a different rhythm, separate the two zones with a clear architectural break, a colour change, a moulding, or a corner. Otherwise, pick one spacing and stay with it across the project.

    4. Q Does the wider spacing affect how strong the panel is?
      A

No. The fibreboard substrate, thickness and edge profile are the same. The grooves are surface routs, not deep cuts, so spacing them further apart does not change the structural feel or rigidity of the sheet. You handle it, cut it, fix it and paint it the same way as any other 9mm V Grooved panel.

    5. Q Is the T&G edge worth it for a small project?
      A

For one or two sheets, the difference is modest. For a longer run of wainscoting or a feature wall with multiple sheets joining along the long edges, yes, definitely. The mechanical lock keeps each joint tight and stops sheets from drifting apart over time, which can happen with simple butt joints as the building moves and temperatures swing. On wainscoting that wraps a whole room, T&G is what keeps the finish looking crisp years after installation.
