Moisture Resistant Chipboard
Floors in UK homes go through more than just daily foot traffic. Damp air, slow drying builds, loft temperature swings and kitchen humidity all play a part. That is why the board underneath matters just as much as the finish on top. Moisture resistant chipboard is chosen when the base layer needs to stay stable while the rest of the project moves forward.
What is MR Chipboard?
MR P5 chipboard is a structural panel, it is produced from compressed wood particles bonded with moisture resistant resins, giving the board better stability in damp and changeable site conditions than standard chipboard.
In UK construction, MR boards are mainly used as flooring panels fixed over timber joists. They are designed to handle everyday structural loads. Most sheets come as P5 T&G chipboard, meaning tongue and groove edges. This locked joint system helps spread load across panels, reduces movement between boards, and improves floor rigidity. It also speeds up installation, which matters on British sites where weather windows can be short.
Thickness choice depends on span and load. P5 18mm chipboard is often used where joist centres are tighter and access is restricted, such as lofts and retrofit work. P5 22mm chipboard is the more common choice for standard floor joist layouts and heavier duty domestic floors.
You will also see branded systems within this category. Caberfloor and EGGER chipboard is widely used as a dependable standard flooring board, while CaberDek, EGGER Peel Clean chipboard is chosen where extra surface protection is needed during the build phase. Both are typical examples of UK market P5 chipboard flooring solutions designed around British construction methods and climate realities.
What is moisture resistant chipboard used for?
The most common use is subfloor construction. P5 chipboard flooring panels are fixed to timber joists to create a strong, level base before the final floor finish goes down. This includes laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, carpet and, with selected protected boards, even tile systems. Because British builders often deal with damp weather, open shell construction, and variable humidity, moisture resistant chipboard gives installers more working tolerance on site.
P5 flooring boards are widely used in:
- Ground and upper floor decks in new build houses.
- Renovation and replacement of floors in older UK properties.
- Loft boarding and attic storage platforms.
- Kitchen and bathroom subfloors where humidity is higher.
- Fast track site work where boards may see short term moisture exposure.
Types of moisture resistant chipboard
Moisture resistant chipboard in this category is not limited to one single board type. While all products are based on P5 grade chipboard for load bearing use, they are designed for different site conditions, protection levels, and building requirements.
Standard P5 T&G chipboard flooring is the most commonly used option. This is the tongue and groove flooring board fixed over joists to form a stable subfloor. It is widely used in housing, refurbishments, and loft projects where moisture resistance and structural strength are both required.
Protected surface boards such as Caberfloor chipboard variants with added site protection layers are designed for active building environments. These boards help reduce surface damage and moisture uptake during the construction phase before final floor finishes are installed.
Weather protected systems including CaberDek chipboard and similar protected panels are made for builds where the floor may be exposed before the roof is fully sealed. These boards come with a removable or bonded surface layer that protects against site dirt and reduces moisture exposure while work continues.
Enhanced protection boards such as high performance protected P5 flooring panels are built for longer exposure periods and heavier site traffic. Some options are suitable for use with underfloor heating and selected tile systems, depending on specification.
Specialist P5 boards are produced for regulated or technical applications. This includes fire rated P5 chipboard and vapour control boards used in timber frame systems, wall structures, and projects where certification or airtightness performance is required.
All of these fall under moisture resistant P5 chipboard, but the right choice depends on exposure risk, build stage, and the final floor system planned.
Available thicknesses are 18mm, and 22mm. Sheet sizes include 2400 x 600 mm and 2400 x 1196 mm. Boards are available in P5 grade to BS EN 312 with E1 formaldehyde class and moisture resistant rating. Edge profiles include tongue and groove and square edge. Finish options include sand finish, film faced, foil top, pressed paper, and permanent coated surfaces, including Protect and Peel Clean Xtra variants. Selected boards carry Euroclass B fire rating. Product standards include structural grade panels for interior use, FSC certified options, and boards rated for temporary exterior exposure, including versions that require treatment for full outdoor use.
Benefits of moisture resistant chipboard
- Stays more stable than standard chipboard in damp air and variable site moisture
- Designed to carry structural floor loads when installed over joists
- Tongue and groove edges lock boards together and help reduce floor movement and squeaks
- Creates a firm and level base for laminate, vinyl, carpet, and engineered flooring
- Faster to install thanks to interlocking edge profiles and ready-to-fit panel sizes
- Easier to handle on site due to narrower board formats commonly used for flooring panels
- Selected boards can remain exposed during early build stages without immediate floor covering
- Works well with insulation and acoustic floor build-ups
- Specialist options available for fire rated and airtight construction systems
- Manufactured to recognised structural board standards used in UK building practice
- Cost effective choice for structural subfloors in housing and renovation projects
