Plywood Flooring
Most people focus on what they will see on the floor. The colour, the pattern, the finish. Then the floor starts to move, creak or feel uneven. Choosing the right plywood for flooring helps prevent these issues from the start. It creates a solid base that keeps everything secure.
What is plywood flooring?
Plywood flooring is an engineered board. It is made from thin layers of wood veneer that are pressed and bonded together. Each layer is laid in a different direction. This gives the board strength. It also helps it stay stable over time. It is used as a base under the final floor finish.
Sheet sizes include 2440mm x 1220mm, 2400mm x 600mm and 2425mm x 600mm. Available in thicknesses from around 3.6mm to 25mm.
Most plywood for flooring is made to recognised standards such as BS EN636. Class 2 boards are suitable for interior use in humid conditions. Class 3 boards can be used in both interior and exterior structural work and offer some resistance to moisture during construction.
The boards are usually supplied sanded and ready to use. They can be painted, varnished or stained. With an E1 rating for formaldehyde, they are suitable for indoor use. FSC-certified options are available.
Surface grades such as B/BB or BB/CC describe how the board looks. Higher grades have a cleaner surface. Lower grades may show knots and natural marks.
What is ply flooring used for?
Ply flooring is used wherever a strong, stable surface is needed before the final finish goes down. It works as a base layer fixed over joists or an existing floor.
It is also a practical option when floors are uneven or worn. Instead of replacing the whole floor, plywood sheets can be laid over the top. This helps level the surface and get it ready for laminate, vinyl, wood or carpet.
The same approach is used under tiles. Reducing movement at this stage helps prevent cracks later on. It is strong enough for daily use. At the same time, it is easy to cut, move and fix on site.
The same applies to workshops and storage areas. The floor needs to be durable, but the build should stay simple and efficient.
In some cases, it is used for raised flooring systems. This makes it easier to access cables or pipework underneath without major changes later.
The same boards can also be used for wall panelling, stair landings and some roofing applications. This depends on the specification and load requirements.
Types of plywood floorboards
The most common option is tongue and groove plywood. These panels lock into each other along the edges. This helps reduce movement, gaps and squeaks.
Square edge plywood sheets are the more flexible option. They do not interlock, so they are easier to cut and adjust on site. This makes them useful for smaller areas, repairs or jobs with a lot of detailed fitting.
In practice, most jobs come down to a simple choice. Use tongue and groove boards when you need a stronger, more fixed floor. Use standard sheets when flexibility and easy cutting matter more.

FAQ
Where to buy plywood flooring?
You can order it directly from Sheet Materials Wholesale. Just go online, pick your boards and place the order in a few clicks.
What screws for plywood flooring?
Use wood screws or flooring screws, usually around 4 to 5mm thick. Length depends on your board, but as a rule, go at least 2 to 2.5 times the thickness. Don’t use nails if you want a solid, quiet floor.
How to install plywood flooring?
Start with a flat surface, that’s half the job done. Lay the sheets, don’t push them tight together, leave a small gap so they can move slightly. Then screw them down properly, not just a few fixings here and there. If it’s fixed well from the start, you won’t be going back to fix it later.
