Description
9mm Bead & Butt Primed Long Grooved Moisture Resistant MDF 101.6mm Centres 2440 x 1220mm (8′ x 4′) gives a wall instant vertical panelling, with the grooves running the full 2440mm length of the sheet. Run the board upright and the grooves stand vertical across its 1220mm width, twelve of them at 101.6mm centres. Those long lines pull the eye upward. A room reads taller and more finished at once. It reaches you primed in white on the face, so you are one proper paint system away from a built-in look.
Primed on the face
The front comes ready primed, which gives you a smooth white base and saves that first messy coat. The back is left bare, so prime it too if it will show or sit in a damp spot. One point worth knowing: ordinary wall emulsion is made for plaster, not timber, so it will not wear well here. Use a wood primer undercoat, then a trim finish such as satinwood or eggshell, and the surface holds up for years.
Made for humidity, not water
This is moisture-resistant MDF, happy with the steamy air of a bathroom or kitchen where standard MDF would swell. It resists damp, but it is not waterproof. Treat it as an interior board, keep it away from standing water and direct splashing, and never use it outdoors. Seal every cut edge before fitting, since a raw edge is where moisture gets in.
How the boards meet
- Square cut, butt-jointed edges that sit tight against the next board
- Each long edge finishes on a half groove, so two boards butt side by side and the seam lands inside a groove
- The 101.6mm repeat carries on unbroken, so the wall reads as one continuous run
- Bead and butt, not tongue and groove, so the boards butt up rather than slot into each other
Where it works best
- Full-height feature walls and chimney breasts, where vertical lines add height
- Hallways and landings, where tall panelling smartens a narrow space
- Behind a bed, for a fitted headboard-style panel without the joinery
- Ceilings run lengthways, for a long, continuous lined effect
- Bathroom and kitchen walls set back from direct water, for a soft panelled feel
- Shops, salons and reception areas that want a classic wall finish quickly
Made in the UK by Matchboard from eucalyptus and pine fibre, the board is built to the EN 622-5 fibreboard specification and rated E1 for low formaldehyde. It is FSC certified, non-structural. Each 8×4 sheet weighs about 19kg, manageable for one or two people to handle.
