5.5mm plywood is a thin sheet material used when a lightweight board is needed. A 5.5mm ply board is easy to handle, quick to cut and simple to fix in place. It is often chosen when thicker boards feel unnecessary for the job.
What is 5.5mm plywood sheet?
A 5.5mm plywood sheet is built from thin timber layers pressed together with alternating grain. A 5.5mm ply sheet is more consistent than solid wood of the same thickness. Depending on the grade and core, plywood 5.5mm is supplied for interior use, flooring underlay or external grade applications. When used externally, the edges need to be properly sealed.
What is 5.5mm ply board used for?
A 5.5mm ply board is chosen when a slim, lightweight sheet is all that’s required to do the job properly. A 5.5mm plywood sheet is often used as flooring underlay. It creates a smooth base for vinyl, laminate or carpet before the final floor goes down.
Plywood 5.5mm is also used for interior wall and ceiling linings, service boxing and surface prep before painting or cladding. Its lightweight and even thickness make a 5.5mm ply sheet easy to handle on site, even in tight or overhead spaces.
In furniture and joinery, 5.5mm plywood is used for cabinet backs, wardrobe backs, drawer bases and internal panels. It also works for lightweight furniture parts and as an infill board in stud walls and partitions in homes and commercial buildings.
Plywood 5.5mm can be used for light structural tasks. It is also suitable for external grade applications in sheltered areas. The board must be properly treated. All edges need to be sealed. Fire retardant 5.5mm plywood is used for wall and ceiling lining in commercial spaces where reaction to fire matters.
Beyond standard building work, 5.5mm ply is commonly used for shopfitting, display units, exhibition builds, templates, prototypes and decorative panels, including routed or CNC-cut features. It is a practical choice wherever a slim, stable easy-to-work sheet is required.
Types of 5.5mm plywood
Structural 5.5mm plywood is a hardwood faced sheet used for light construction work where a slim, stable board is enough. This type of 5.5mm ply board offers good dimensional stability for walls, floors and general building tasks.
5.5mm underlay plywood is designed to create a smooth, even base for vinyl, LVT, laminate or carpet. A 5.5mm plywood sheet performs well under flooring, reducing movement and creating a flatter base before the final surface goes down.
5.5mm fire retardant plywood is treated to slow the spread of flames and is chosen for commercial or public interiors with fire performance requirements. These 5.5mm ply sheets are used for wall and ceiling linings rather than structural loads.
5.5mm exterior plywood is suitable for sheltered outdoor use once edges are sealed and the surface is protected. This type of 5.5mm ply board can be used for garden buildings, temporary exterior panels and covered outdoor areas.
Combi core 5.5mm plywood uses hardwood and poplar veneers to keep the sheet light but strong. This type of 5.5mm ply sheet is used for furniture and joinery. It is also chosen for interior projects that need a thin, stable panel that is easy to handle.
5.5mm plywood is available in 2440 x 1220mm (8’ x 4’), 3050 x 1220mm (10’ x 4’) and 3050 x 1525mm (10’ x 5’). Boards come with a square edge and a smooth, sanded veneer finish suitable for painting or staining. Specifications vary across the range. Options include BS EN636 Class 2 and Class 3, and some flooring sheets align with BS 8203:2017. Fire rated versions are available, including Euroclass B and Euroclass D-s2,d0.
All sheets are E1 formaldehyde class, with grades such as B/BB and BB/CC. Moisture resistant options exist, along with CE2+ and CE4 product standards. Interior and treated exterior sheets are both available, depending on the product selected. Sheets come with FSC® certification where marked. BS EN 636 Class 2 and 3 options available.
