Large Plywood

Large plywood is available in various thicknesses from 3.6mm – 25mm and size 3050mm x 1220mm (10′ x 4′) and Extra Large Plywood sheets 3050mm x 1525mm (10×5) as well as their own gradings and classifications. It is also one of the most common types of plywood. Let’s review what large plywood is, what is so special about it, what uses it often finds, and what benefits it has.

What is large plywood?

Large plywood sheets are made of three to nine layers of thin wood veneer sheets, which are bonded together. Each veneer has a grain perpendicular to the veneer beneath it (or tighter angles of 45 degrees in some plywood). By doing this, a product with outstanding dimensional stability, resistance to splitting, and resistance to warping are produced. Wood species used are red oak, birch, walnut, maple and many more.

The typical 3050mm hardwood log produces a large amount of B- and C-grade material.

Thicknesses range from 3.6mm to 25mm. Common sheet sizes are 3050mm x 1220mm and 3050mm x 1525mm. Boards are supplied square edged with a smooth, sanded surface. Depending on the sheet, they can be paintable, lacquerable, varnishable or stainable. E1 low formaldehyde options are available, and many sheets are supplied as legally sourced material.

Large plywood classification:

Our large plywood sheets come as Class 2 plywood which is suitable for use in humid interior or covered exterior applications offering limited resistance to moisture during the construction.

Depending on the panel specification, large size plywood sheets in this range can be supplied as BS EN636 Class 2 or BS EN636 Class 3. Class 2 plywood is used in humid interior areas or covered exterior applications. Class 3 plywood is suitable for interior and exterior structural use and offers limited resistance to weather during the construction phase.

Large plywood analysis/grading:

B and BB grades Minor flaws may be seen in the B grade plywood, which is smooth, flat, and elegant in appearance. BB grade often refers to the reverse of the item, which is slightly less attractive and has a few additional flaws.

The C and CC grades Grade C plywood is utilised when the material’s strength is required. There are surface flaws like open knots and fractures. Such grading cannot be used in applications where the material’s appearance and look are important. Plywood of the CC Grade is used when just one acceptable face is needed. Normal veneer construction includes CC-grade plywood at the bottom.

Available grades include B/BB and BB/BB. In practical terms, this means the face is usually cleaner and more consistent than the reverse, while some sheets may still show patches, knots or other natural and repaired imperfections typical of commercial grade plywood. Some oversized plywood sheets also come with a light coloured face veneer, which works well where appearance matters.

What is large plywood used for?

Large plywood sheets are chosen when the job needs wider coverage and fewer joins. Working with one larger board is simpler than joining several smaller pieces. It helps keep the result neat and easier to control.

Large size plywood sheets are often used for joinery, furniture and storage. Full panels can be cut from one sheet, which makes the process faster and more consistent.

Extra large plywood sheets are useful when a flat and even base is needed. They are often used under flooring or for lining surfaces where movement needs to be kept to a minimum.

Oversized plywood sheets are also used when speed matters. Fewer cuts and fewer joins mean less time spent adjusting on site.

Why choose our oversized plywood sheets?

When you work with large sheets, you want everything to feel predictable from the first cut. The board should be flat, the surface clean, and the size consistent across every sheet. That is what makes the job move without delays.

Sheet Materials Wholesale supplies oversized plywood sheets that are easy to work with on site. The boards cut clean, sit properly and help keep the build accurate from start to finish. This matters whether it is joinery work, fitting panels or working on larger interior projects.
