What is standard MDF?

Standard MDF, or medium density fibreboard, is an engineered wood product. It is made from fine wood fibres bonded together under heat and pressure. The result is a dense and uniform MDF board. It has no knots, no grain direction. This makes it much more predictable to work with than natural timber. The board has the same structure all the way through. When you cut or drill it, it stays consistent across the whole sheet. That makes the job easier.

You can get standard MDF in thicknesses starting from 2mm up to 60mm, depending on how light or solid your project needs to be. Sheets are available in several sizes, including 2440mm x 1220mm, 3050mm x 1220mm, 3050mm x 1525mm and larger panels up to 3660mm x 1830mm.

Most sheets are supplied with square edges and a consistent sanded finish. This makes the surface suitable for paint, lacquer or veneer, with predictable results across the panel. FSC-certified options are available.

Standard MDF is made to standards such as BS EN622-5. It is a non structural board for interior use only. Formaldehyde levels are usually E1, with some lower emission E0.5 options. The board is made from wood fibres like pine and eucalyptus, which gives it strength and easy machining.

What is MDF standard panel used for?

Most people end up using standard MDF when they need something that cuts cleanly and finishes without extra work. It is mainly used on interior jobs where the surface will be painted or shaped to fit a specific space.

Types of Standard MDF

Large Standard MDF is all about size. These sheets cover more area in one go. That means fewer joints and a neater result on bigger projects.
