Types of tongue and groove chipboard

Fire retardant chipboard
Fire-retardant options are treated to resist fire, often with a Euroclass B rating. They are used in floors and walls where building regulations or safety requirements demand enhanced fire protection, especially in risky zones.
Mezzanine chipboard
This is very thick, heavy-duty T&G chipboard designed for supporting loads over larger spans, such as mezzanine floors or working platforms. When creating raised areas inside a building, it can accommodate structural stress and span larger spaces.
Chipboard loft boards (also T&G)
Tongue & groove panels are suitable for light domestic use where you don’t require full structural load-bearing strength. Sometimes P2 or similar grades. It is perfect for loft conversions, attic storage, or where floors don’t carry full live loads but use interlocking boards to avoid movement and noise.
P5 chipboards
This is a robust, structural chipboard grade that is moisture-resistant and designed for general flooring use. Boards are T&G for secure jointing to joists. They are perfect for domestic flooring (ground or first floor), kitchens, living rooms, etc.

FAQ
What does P5 mean on chipboard?
P5 is a classification under the BS EN 312 for chipboards regarding strength, durability, and applications. The classification system goes up to P7 and specifies a board’s performance in load-bearing, humid conditions, mechanical strength, and dimensional stability in damp conditions.
P5 is more for internal areas that may get damp or where moisture might occasionally be serious, like in a kitchen or bathroom.
How thick should chipboard flooring be?
